Freeze Relief Installation Guide

Step-by-step instructions to properly install your Freeze Relief unit

Freeze Relief Components

Freeze Relief Unit

Main component with vents that allow water to escape if the discharge line freezes.

1-1/2" Collar

Connects to the band board with caulk for a finished look and better air seal.

4" to 3" Reducer

Adapter for connecting to different sized discharge lines.

Recommended Installation Setup

1-1/2" Sump Pump Line

Freeze Relief

4" Discharge Line

3" Buried Line

Important Note

Install Freeze Relief so the vents face away from the house. Maintain at least 12" clearance above ground level.

Installation Steps

Prepare Installation Area

Identify where your sump pump discharge line exits your home. Ensure you have clear access and enough space to work.

If installing a new elbow, put the 1-1/2" collar up to the band board with a little caulk for a finished look and better air seal.

Position Freeze Relief Unit

Install Freeze Relief in-line as the transition between the 1-1/2" sump pump line and the 3" or 4" buried discharge line.

  • Ensure vents face away from the house
  • Position top of Freeze Relief about 4" below elbow
  • Maintain at least 12" clearance above ground

Connect to Discharge Line

Connect the Freeze Relief to your buried discharge line using the appropriate adapter:

  • If your buried discharge line is 3", use the 4" to 3" reducer
  • If your buried discharge line is 4", connect directly to the 4" pipe

Test the System

Once installation is complete, test your sump pump to ensure water flows properly through the system.

  • Check for leaks at all connection points
  • Verify water discharges through Freeze Relief when buried line is blocked
  • Ensure vents are clear and functioning properly

Important Considerations

Installations to Avoid

  • Do not reduce back down into a discharge line smaller than 3"
  • Do not place the last relief port within 6" of grade
  • Avoid installing Freeze Relief with vents facing the house

Pro Tips

  • The more distance between the Freeze Relief vents and the ground, the better
  • Install the top of the Freeze Relief about 4" below elbow for easier installation
  • 12" clearance above ground is better than 10", and 10" is better than 8"
